Nicaragua: “TUKTAN YAMNI” Integrated Model

This Joint Programme's goal was to reduce chronic malnutrition in Nicaragua's Northern and Southern Autonomous Administrative Regions, home to many indigenous communities, by providing pregnant and breastfeeding women, children under five and school children up to 12 with integrated food security and nutrition services.

The programme worked to implement the Zero Hunger Programme integrated model among 2000 target families, helping to coordinate its production and organization components with its health/nutrition and education/nutrition components.

Its objectives were:

  1. Strengthening the capacity of families by increasing the availability of food and improving the nutritional level of their diets, even in the event of food crises or natural disasters;
  2. Strengthening the capacity of institutions to implement the model in a coordinated way and prioritize child nutrition as a fundamental right and pillar of human development.

The most significant contributions of this intervention model were:

  1. Adaptation of the programme to the ethnic context of the territory;
  2. Promotion of working with families;
  3. Building local capacity
  4. Organization and community empowerment
  5. Interagency coordination
  6. Leadership of the regional authorities in nutrition and food security policy.
Main achievements included:

  • Delivery of agricultural packages (including basic grains, plants from the Musaceae or banana family, tubers, vegetables, and poultry) to more than 1,000 families.
  • Strengthening of three MINSA healthcare centers, which will lead to improved healthcare services for families in 42 communities.
  • Training of members of the School Meals Committee (CAE) and provision of school snacks to 100% of the target schools.
  • Families in the program improved their Nutrition and Food Security capacity through increased food availability and nutritional enhancement of the diet of pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under two years. Thanks to improved feeding practices, under-5 children in participating families increased their weight.
  • Improved hygiene practices in adults and schoolchildren.
  • Exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life increased by 15 % among target families.
