Women’s groups in Baucau to receive funding from MDG Fund

 

September, 2009- US$3.5 million dollars for nutrition and food security has been allocated by the UN MDG Achievement Fund for Timor-Leste. The 3-year funding will target pregnant and breastfeeding women and their under-five children and primary school children in Aileu, Baucau, Manatuto and Oecusee districts. The programme contributes to the national effort in accelerating the reduction of child and maternal under-nutrition. This is part of moving towards achieve Millennium Development Goal No. 1 on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger.


A delegation representing the MDG Achievement Fund visited four different women’s groups in Baucau that are set to receive funding from two joint programmes under the MDG Fund Timor-Leste; Supporting Gender Equality and Women’s Rights - a three-year programme that will take place between December 2008 to December 2011 in the districts of Dili, Bobonaro, Covalima, Baucau, and Oecussi; and Promoting Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security - another three-year programme in the districts of Aileu, Baucau, Manatuto and Oecussi.
