Ancient Apollonia Museum reopening

After more than 20 years of closure, the Archaeological museum of Apollonia, in southwestern Albania, reopened for the public in December 2011. Established in 1985, the Apollonia archaeological museum is located in a medieval monastery in the heart of the Apollonia Archaeological Park, one of the two most important ancient Greek colonial settlements in present day Albania and part of a region inhabitted by the early Illyrian people.

The museum, restored with the assistance of the MDG-Fund, contains a unique collection of materials from the excavation of Apollonia, which was begun after WWI. Its reopening is expected to increase the appeal of the area to tourists and visitors.
