MANILA, Philippines — Spend more to ensure that the country will achieve its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza aired this appeal Friday as the Philippines has only four years to achieve the MDGs and government has not provided enough funds to sustain the campaign of local government units (LGUs) to reduce poverty and hunger and improve the general welfare of their constituents.

Braganza said that while LGUs such as his city have been using their own resources to boost their chances of meeting the MDGs, additional money from both the national government and international community is still needed.

“The LGUs are at the forefront of the war against hunger and poverty including education, maternal and child health and environment sustainability. No local government can finance the entire requirement for MDG financing. National government support and cooperation will help us win this war,” Braganza, also the secretary general of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), stressed.
