Mamita María

“The lady in the photo is María Hueiquimilla Moraga, my maternal grandmother, but to us, her grandchildren, she is “Mamita María”. I chose this picture because I think it really represents “Where We Come From”. Mamita María is the last member of our family to carry the name "Hueiquimilla", of indigenous Mapuche origin. She is a clear example of how inter-marriage swallows up ethnic groups, but also how it absorbs their cultures. Mamita María has strong indigenous characteristics, but she is completely at ease and blends into contemporary society. This shows us not only where we’re going, but, most importantly, reminds us of where we come from."
