The School of Journalism and Public Relations of FYR Macedonia discusses role of media in promoting tolerance and dialogue

A number of issues will be discussed during the round table to be held on 20 December 2010 in the EU Info Center, Skopje, organized by the School of Journalism and Public Relations.


Do the media in their daily reporting reflect the cultural diversity of our society? To what extent do the media in Macedonia enable access of different social and cultural groups to their programming or content? What are the basic principles of professional, inclusive, sensitive and responsible media coverage which can contribute to mutual tolerance, dialogue and a better understanding? To what extent do the media comply with the professional and ethical standards while reporting for different social and cultural groups? Do the journalists themselves (intentionally or not) generate prejudices, intolerance or hatred?


Along with the round table discussion, the School of Journalism and Public Relations will promote the publication of the textbook titled “Media, Citizens and Intercultural communication”, whose authors are Marina Tuneva and Emilija Petreska Kamenjarova. Its publishing has been generously supported by UNESCO Venice Office, in the framework of the UN Joint Programme “Enhancing Inter-ethnic Community Dialogue and Collaboration” and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.


This textbook, which is primarily intended for undergraduate students in Journalism and in Public Relations, for the courses of Media and Society and Intercultural Communication, will also serve active journalists and editors, as a comprehensive learning resource from which they can draw recommendations and guidelines related to the role of media in the promotion of intercultural dialogue.
