Traditional crafts such as embroidery are still vibrant among many ethnic minorities like the Miao of Leishan county in Southwest China, though they are mainly practiced by the middle-aged and elderly. The MDG-Fund’s China Culture and Development Partnership Framework is assisting ethnic artisans and entrepreneurs to improve their livelihoods by formalizing their crafts production.
A wide range of training workshops have been held on design innovation, product quality, management, marketing and artisan well-being. The programme is also is helping artisans link to broader markets by taking part in the Shanghai Expo, the UNESCO crafts award programme, and national and international trade fairs.
