The Dong rice-fish-duck system

A farmer from Xiaohuang, a pilot site of the Congjiang Dong’s Rice‐Fish‐Duck System. In this traditional system, which exemplifies Dong values of biodiversity, environmental protection and sustainable land use, farmers plant rice in paddies that are also used to raise fish and ducks, which eat pests and fertilize the crop.

The MDG-Fund supported research on the system, conducted trainings to increase production, and helped secure designation of the method as a FAO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS). The designation helps boost prices for the farmers’ products and increases incomes among this impoverished people.
