Culture to build livelihoods for China's ethnic minorities

China’s 106 million ethnic minorities are among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable of its people. These women are from an ethnic Dong village in Congjiang County famous for its Dong Grand Song singing culture. The Dong song is the vehicle of Dong culture, portraying their history, agriculture, family life, teachings for children, romance, emotions and traditional wisdom.

The MDG-Fund is helping ethnic groups use their culture and identity to boost their economic development. It supported a cultural mapping exercise during which villagers decided to revive their annual Dong Singing Festival; several thousand people attended the three-day event.
